Affiliate Internet Marketing Tip: Three Ways to Failing Miserably at Affiliate Internet Marketing

Affiliate internet marketing is a great example of the 80/20 rule. Eighty percent of affiliates generate only twenty percent of the profits while twenty percent of affiliate marketers generate eighty percent of the revenue. Why the disparity?

In a recent survey conducted by Marketing Sherpa, affiliate merchants were asked about the main challenges in affiliate internet marketing. The clear majority responded that it was finding and recruiting high quality affiliates. This is not surprising. Affiliate internet marketing is a great example of the 80/20 rule. Eighty percent of affiliates generate only twenty percent of the profits while twenty percent of affiliate marketers generate eighty percent of the revenue. Why the disparity? Part of the reason is that many people are just getting into affiliate marketing and have a learning curve to go thru. That is understandable but a larger reason is that many affiliates whether beginner or grizzled veteran are making mistakes that are costing them big time dollars and will continue to do so.

1. Not treating it as a business

Affiliate Marketing has many advantages such as no overhead, no products to stock or customer complaints to deal with. Just promote the product and if someone buys you get paid. Great but it is still a business. That means you must: a. Set up an action plan and follow thru on it. b. Set realistic timetables for generating income. c. Get a website d. Buy a domain name e. Research your target markets f. Brand your affiliate business g. Write content h. Advertise i. Track j. Keep records And much more. This is not a hobby. Earning income online is a full time effort. If you have not done so already set up your office space and allot specific times in your day where you work on nothing but your affiliate business.

2. Choosing the wrong affiliate program

Because of the never ending advertising most of us face on a daily basis, there is a tendency for many affiliates to get caught up in the hype. They choose a big ticket item because it pays out great commissions or some product that is being advertised as the next great thing. There is nothing wrong with this unless you do not do your homework. Of course you should have some interest in the product but the more important point is there should be a market for that affiliate program you want to promote. Watch the news; check out the forums, read some articles. Ask questions or conduct surveys on your website. Do not confine your research to just learning about your affiliate program. Check out the world around it and how it could affect your target market.

3. Too many at a Time

One of the things top affiliate marketers have in common is focus. The ability to pick one affiliate program, bring it to profit, put a system in place so the program runs on autopilot (providing the affiliate with steady income), rinse and repeat. But it starts with the one affiliate program. Many affiliates naturally want to generate multiple streams of income but expending your effort on five things at once increases the chances of not achieving any of them. Pick one that has some interest to you and that you already know has a solid target market, and then follow your action plan. When you start making a steady profit, then move on to the next program. Also try to put an autopilot system in place. Getting clear of the day to day activities of running any online business is the only true way to grow that business. Building a money making affiliate business that can run without you takes hard work and patience with yourself. Do your research, choose the right program, give all of your attention and effort to it, then proceed to the next affiliate product. Treat your affiliate business like a business and you can not go wrong. Daryl Campbell invites you to grab The Ultimate Website Video package. Affiliate Businesses

This article outlines four basic steps that even a beginner can use to create a successful website dedicated to promoting affiliate business programs within a specific niche.

An affiliate business program is simply a program in which you earn commissions by selling someone else’s product or service. Alternatively, you can also earn money by simply advertising for their site. If you choose to join an affiliate business program on the internet, it would be best if you had your own website, and ideally one that is conductive to selling the goods and services of your merchant partner. In other words, it must be a site that caters to a specific group of people, or a niche market. If people buy your partner’s products through your site, you will receive a percentage of the sale price.

Here are four tips on building an online presence for your affiliate business program(s):

1. Hire a professional web designer and ask to see samples of their work. You want to see currently working sites that have been put together by the outfit to ensure that you like what the finished product would look like. It is too easy to be wowed by a web designer’s low price tag only to later end up with a site that is either run of the mill – as it the case with many software programs that only offer for one or two variations on a theme – or so packed full of slow loading graphics and flash footage that some consumers who are still not up to date with computing items will be left out.

2. If you decide to go it alone, pay to have your site hosted. While a free host sounds good, your website will also become an advertising solution for the free host. Thus, you will have to display banners, ads, pop ups, and other undesirable bits and pieces in order to have that free site set up. Instead, purchase your domain name and pay for the hosting. An alternative is to create a free blog or squidoo lens which already has an organized system for you to add content and links. You can then simply drive traffic to your blog or lens.

3. Do not overproduce your site. This applies especially to first time webmasters. It is so tempting to add as many "drag and drop" elements on a site as possible. Resist the urge to have email buttons, counters, guest books, weather forecasts, map functions and other items on your site all jostled together. Instead, each page of your web site should be clear, concise, and quick loading. Furthermore, the less links you offer, the less chance there is for a broken link. Consistently stay on top of your links to make sure that customers do not get error notifications.

4. Last but not least, perhaps the most important tip on building an online presence for your affiliate business program(s) is to have content that is sticky and that will be so useful to your customers that they will either bookmark your site or come back time and again from memory. The goal is to offer unique content, articles, news, and other web content related to your affiliate programs that your clients or customers will appreciate, use, and perhaps also pass on to others.

When promoting your affiliate business program(s) you will have to have an online presence to stay competitive. Of course, building an online presence to showcase, and make money, with the affiliate programs you promote is not as easy as it sounds, and the number one mistake made by those who want to make money with affiliate programs is to do it themselves and cut costs wherever possible. This leads to a host of sites that look or feel simply unprofessional.

Sticking to a certain niche per website is an important concept to understand. Many beginners to affiliate program promotion beleive that they can just offer up any programs together on one site, drive traffic to the site, and expect money to start rolling in. But in order to get anybody to sign up or make a purchase you have to know who your audience is and cater to them specifically. There may be millions of people on the internet, but your site will not serve you and make you money if you treat it as a "catch all". Having a focus will give you a much better conversion rate than an unfocused website.

Google Slap

Did Google Slap You?

Are you an affiliate who uses Google’s Adwords to promote your affilate program? Then this article is for you.  According to the blogs, forums and a variety of other news sources affiliate advertisers are getting slapped around by Google big time!

affiliate marketing

Google Adwords costs are skyrocketing, sponsored listing placements have hit rock bottom or are disappearing altogether.

What about you? Has your site been affected? Do you want to know the real reason why this happened? Would you like to prevent this from happening to your affiliate site, or regain your Adwords placement?

Then listen up.

Because contrary to what you might have heard, "Google’s Slap" has absolutely nothing to do with squeeze pages or other sign-up forms on your landing pages. Nothing!

Then what’s the problem? Relevance. It’s all about your landing page’s relevance people.

Technically speaking, Google changed their "Quality Score" standards. The change mostly effects marketers who point their AdWords campaigns to simple sales pages and squeeze pages (AKA lead capture pages). These marketers have lost a lot of traffic and impressions and have seen their cost per click skyrocket.

Google has made it crystal clear about its requirements that you make your pages relevant to the keyword, title and description used in your ad.

Where does it say that?

Right in Google AdWords Landing Page and Site Quality Guidelines:
https://adwords.google.com/select/siteguidelines.html

Following is an excerpt from those guidelines:

"If users don’t quickly see what they clicked on your ad to find, they’ll leave your site frustrated and may never return to your site or click on ads in the future. Here are some pointers for making sure that doesn’t happen:

Link to the page on your site that provides the most useful and accurate information about the product or service in your ad.

Ensure that your landing page is relevant to your keywords and your ad text.

Distinguish sponsored links from the rest of your site content.

Try to provide information without requiring users to register. Or, provide a preview of what users will get by registering.

In general, build pages that provide substantial and useful information to the end-user. If your ad does link to a page consisting of mostly ads or general search results (such as a directory or catalog page), provide additional information beyond what the user may have seen in your ad or on the page prior to clicking on your ad.

You should have unique content (should not be similar or nearly identical in appearance to another site). For more information, see our affiliate guidelines."

Here’s the summarized version: If all of the affiliate links are removed from your site does your site still provide relevant, informative and valuable content for visitors?

It really doesn’t get any clearer than that what Google wants to see, now does it?

All Google is trying to do is get you to improve the quality of your site. Having quality content on your site like articles, reports, news, etc., will also help your AdWords listings.

In addition, content rich web sites rank well in organic search engine listings.

Through the placement of your site in the search engines, you will be able to attract more and better targeted traffic.

Content rich sites are also more likely to obtain incoming links from outside sites. Google loves incoming links. These links will also pull in targeted traffic.

Speaking of links, when you add content to your site, link directly to a content page from the landing page. My research has shown, sites with a considerable number of pages have been less effected by Google’s Slap.

Also, add a "Contact" page to your site and link directly to this page from the landing page.

Finally, create a "Site Map" and link to all your content pages directly from the site map. In addition, the content page you’ve linked to from the landing page, should link to the site map.

I contacted a few affiliates I know, while doing research for this article and here’s what I discovered:

The affiliates who provide relevant, valuable content on their landing pages have found their efforts are actually being rewarded during this latest Google Dance.

I also discovered, their Adwords costs are actually decreasing, while their placement in the sponsored listings are increasing, thus making their ads more visible.

In closing, if you want to avoid Google’s Slap, just provide quality content throughout your site, link directly to the content from your landing page, and make your landing pages relevant to the keyword, title and description used in your ad.

Work from Home

Five steps to earning money with affiliate internet marketing

Affiliate internet marketing is one of the best and easiest ways to make money online. So why are the overwhelming majority of affiliate marketers unsuccessful?

affiliate marketing

It is all about planning. Many people getting into affiliate marketing are thinking about making a fast buck. It is hard to fault them. Since the formation of CDNow almost thirteen years ago, affiliate marketing has exploded into a billion dollar per year industry. There are also the benefits including little to no overhead, residual income, getting paid for the work of your downline and not having to deal with any customer service problems.

But it is still a business and many people do not understand that a business requires planning. No matter how great the product or service, if you do not have any guidelines mapped out beforehand then you will probably wind up like ninety five percent of affiliate (and internet) marketers who do not make any money online.

Affiliate internet marketing is a lot of work, time, patience, mistakes, uncertainty and constant learning. The key is to create a plan and work it.

Where does it start?

1. Your Office.

Whether working out of your garage, kitchen or bathroom (hey sometimes you do what you got to do), make sure your office is comfortable with proper lighting, ventilation and as little distraction as possible. It is hard to get any work done with the phone ringing every 15 minutes. If you have to, let the answering machine pick up. Set aside blocks of time where you concentrate on nothing but your affiliate marketing

2. Learn and Keep Learning.

Study the affiliate marketers who are making money. Visit affiliate marketing forums. While your overall goal is to become successful, you may from time to time have to change your strategies. Forums are a great place to get tips and ideas that you can adapt to your business. Also, many affiliate programs now offer conference rooms. This allows you to live chat with the product creators, as well as other affiliate marketers participating in the program.

Some conferences are just cheerleading sessions. They get you fired up to sell the product but do not give you any concrete ways to sell it. However, many merchants do provide solid support, answer any and all questions in real time and recommend affiliate marketing strategies to help you. If your merchant is scheduling conferences on a regular basis, take advantage of it.

3. Research Your Target Market.

It is not enough just to know what is going on with your product or service. What are the new trends? Watch television. Read newspapers and magazines. Find out where the hot markets are popping up and how it affects your business. Do not just read affiliate news. Get as much information as possible on what is happening around the world and then apply it to your affiliate business.

4. Your own website.

This is the command center for your affiliate marketing campaign. Yes you can promote different programs without one but this makes it more difficult and less profitable for you. Having your own website means you can capture the visitor information before you send them to the merchant. If they do not like the particular product you are selling at this time, you can always contact them about other offers or promotions later. The beauty is once you get their name and e-mail, you can contact them for as long as they remain on your opt in list. This is called backend and you can believe it is how many of the top affiliate marketers make their money. The money is in the list and the only way to do that is get your own website where people can sign up.

5. Do not kid yourself.

We all want to be millionaires by the time the sun goes down or at least by early the next morning but that is not reality. Affiliate marketing is hard work so set a goal that you can achieve. How much realistic profit can you generate in a month? Start small. If you earned five hundred dollars last month, shoot for seventy hundred fifty next month. They may seem like baby steps but they can stop you from getting any false expectations which lead to discouragement and finally giving up all together. It may take awhile before you actually see any money so hang in there.

According to the AffStat 2007 report over eighty percent of affiliate programs offer revenue sharing. If you plan and treat your affiliate internet marketing like a business, then there is no reason why you cannot share in the profits.
